This speaker is a little muddy at lower volume but brightens right up when you give it a litlle juice. At this price level I'm very satisfied.
After buying and returning several speakers, these are officially the ones I’m settling on. They have really nice sound quality, I’m using them on a turntable with a built in preamp so you may eventually want to invest in one with these guys. The remote is awesome but as I’m using a turntable I have to get up to take my vinyls on and off the table anyways, but when I got an emergency phone call the mute button came in clutch. Best idea ever to have a remote for these guys, just wish it was maybe a aaa battery or as rather than the coin battery. The setup was super easy, and the cables are small so I could fit all of them in a cable management strip.

Customers praised these powered bookshelf speakers for exceptional sound quality at their price point, with many describing them as "warm, full sound" with "surprising low end" and "clean, clear, balanced" audio. They excel with vinyl, TV, and computer use. Some noted bass can be muddy at low volumes and may benefit from a subwoofer addition. Instructions were occasionally vague.

Well, I really wanted to love and keep these speakers but alas, it's not going to happen. It took me a while to settle on a pair of quality small yet affordable powered monitors that have a subwoofer output (and built-in crossover). These Edifier R1280Ts speakers seemed to be the right speakers, and if that was your whole system they might very well be! But that's not the case for me.These are my computer speakers, and I don't connect the speakers directly from the 3.5mm jack to the RCA input, instead I use a USB Digital-to-Analog Converter to take advantage of higher sampling rates. I listen to music on my Mac mini M1 mostly using Apple Music. The Mac mini M1 is connected to a Schiit Modi DAC via USB, which is connected to a Schiit Loki Mini+ Equalizer (awesome combo by the way). These two devices are connected via short 6" RCA cables, in turn connected to the Edifier Speakers also with short quality RCA cables. This is where things fall apart a little. Everything sounds great until I reach about 3/4 of the range when boosting the lower frequencies using the two leftward knobs on the Schiit Loki Mini+ equalizer. The bass starts clipping at any volume setting. This didn't happen when connecting the Edifier speakers directly to the Mac mini M1, or even when connecting the speakers directly to the Schiit Modi DAC. It would happen a tiny bit when connected the Mac directly to the Schiit Loki Mini+ equalizer, though not nearly as pronounced. At first I thought it was the equalizer that was the problem, and Schiit support was very responsive and helped me out by sending me a replacement (the equalizer I had purchased from them was from someone else returning it after all). Unfortunately the exact same thing happened with the replacement unit. I then tried 3 different amplifiers connected to small passive bookshelf speakers (a simple 2x50W amp, a 2x160W amp and finally a 2x50W+sub amp). When the Schiit Modi and Loki combo is connected to an amplifier and passive speakers, there is no clipping happening, even at higher volumes and the bass knobs boosted both on the amplifiers and the Loki equalizer. That's where clipping happens on the Edifier.I suspect the input sensitivity here is the issue, and the compatibility with the signal sent by the Loki Mini+ equalizer. Interestingly, I noticed that there was more clipping on the Edifier speakers when connected to the Line 1 input, vs the Line 2 inputs. I noticed this when trying to figure out what was wrong with the equalizer while working with Schiit customer support. It was faint enough I thought I was making it up. But then I looked at the specs on the speakers and saw that the input sensitive of Line 1 is 500mV±50mV and the input sensitivity of Line 2 is 700mV±50mV which I assume would explain why I heard more clipping when connected to Line 1. I can't find the specs for the first 2x50W amp I tried but I think its input sensitivity was probably advertised as "≤ 280mV.” The second amp was 775mV and the amp I am currently using is also ≤ 280mV. None of these have clipping at any volume I tested (the Edifier speakers would have clipping even at the lowest volumes).Anyhow, I am committed to the components I have more than I am to the speakers, hence my return. Despite all of these, the Edifier speakers sounded fantastic on their own. I wouldn't hesitate getting them if I had a different setup.

I bought these to replace my Edifier r1700 set that was transferred from my PC desk to the TV. I didn't want to write a review comparing the 2 sets but I think it's something people are interested in hearing about considering the $50 price difference between the 2 sets. So here it goes.Build quality: honestly they're about the same. Both sets are solid speakers. The controls on the 1280's seem to be a little cheaper feeling and not as appealing.Aesthetics: this has to go to the 1700's. The paper driver cones on the 1280's are not as attractive as the drivers on the 1700's. The same goes for the tweeters - the 1280's just aren't as attractive. If you prefer to leave the covers on, which I don't know why you would, then I wouldn't see much difference between them.Sound: here's what I'm here for. I will admit that the 1280's are somewhat more crisp and maybe a little less boomy. But, you can tell the sound coming out of the 1700's is more balanced, or at least what I consider balanced (I do like mid-heavy speakers historically). It just depends on your music taste. The 1280's really struggle with heavy rock but shine with crisp, lighter music like soft rock and bluegrass/country/americana. The 1700's shine when playing heavier music like hard rock but handle the other stuff pretty well. I prefer to listen to the 1700 set.Final thoughts: In my opinion, you get what you pay for with these speakers. The 1280's are still great, great speakers and will blow most systems out of the water - but - the 1700's are still slightly better in every aspect. Worth an extra $50? Yes, if you care a lot about sound quality. If you don't you won't notice any difference between the 2.

Instructions are somewhat vague but once the speakers were installed correctly the sound was good.

Much more than you expected!!! I've had these speakers for several years. I use them for my TV, I've used them for my vinyl player. They. Simply. Are. Amazing. Warm, full sound. Surprising low end. Clean, clear, balanced. You're done looking - buy these.

The quality of these are very good. The sound is also good but could be better. The fact that you can hook a sub up to these makes all the difference. Once I attached that bottom end the sound came into play. Would definitely recommend for people on a budget who are a fan of vinyl.

I'm writing this review three years later. I would give them a higer rating for sound, but new price takes a lot of that rating away. 109$ then and 169$ now? Their good, but I don't believe their worth 60$ more than what I paid.

Still working well after a few months except certain songs will have distorted sections regardless of how I hook it up to my PC. Sounds is very nice though first speaker like this I've purchased.

Great budget studio monitors with close to neutral (ever so slightly warm) frequency response. They are lovely.

I really couldn’t be happier with the sound of these. They are the perfect size to sit next to a monitor, and they sound very impressive. If you purchase I would recommend getting a subwoofer to plug in because they do lack some bass in my opinion. The remote also feels a bit cheap compared to the quality of everything else.Overall I would definitely recommend these if your looking for some high quality low price speakers.
